Therapy FAQs

Therapy is ...
More than just sitting on a couch talking about your problems. Therapy is healing through human interaction, understanding, and empathy.
Therapy is a space created outside the pressures of society for you to just be and discover yourself from the inside out.

Is therapy right for me?
Short answer, YES! No matter your presenting concern, if you are trying therapy for the first time or a seasoned therapy vet, at Renaissance Therapy, we acknowledge and examine your intersections and identities to understand how they relate to your presenting concerns.
Look, life is hard. Therapy is a tool to help address your struggles with a little help.

What can I expect from therapy?
I like to say that therapy is what you make of it. At Renaissance Therapy, I serve as a guide or partner to help you challenge the areas of your life that you feel require some attention. Although you can expect to work in therapy, I promise we will work at your pace and make sure we are not moving too far out of your comfort zone. We call this “meeting you where you are at.”
-
How often should I come to therapy?
That all depends on you. I will say, as the relationship between client and therapist is the single greatest variable in determining therapeutic success, increased frequency, in the beginning, is recommended to build rapport and comfort in the process. It’s also important for goal setting. After that, it’s what you feel benefits you.
-
Will anyone know if I see a therapist?
Therapy is 100% confidential. At Renaissance Therapy, we have strict ethical codes to abide by. One of them is the confidentiality between therapist and client. You can be assured that whatever we discuss in the therapy room stays in the therapy room.

René, why did you decide to become a therapist?
Honestly, representation. In my own journey with mental health, I struggled to find a Black therapist that looked like me and understood the many challenges unique to my ethnicity and race. Therapy has traditionally been a space that excludes Black voices and experiences. Together we can change that.
